About Niles Animal Hospital and Bird Medical Center
Niles Animal Hospital was established by Dr. T. J. Lafeber Jr. in 1949 as a hospital that not only sees dogs and cats but specializes in avian and exotic medicine. Dr. Lafeber was considered one of the most leading authorities on bird care, he developed a product line of food, treats and supplements to give proper bird nutrition. Today it is known as the Lafeber Company. He was a pioneer in setting an in-house diagnostic lab, enabling us to quickly generate laboratory results for ill patients. We still provide these services today. His passion was working with birds, wildlife and exotics. He enjoyed teaching and continuing these specialties with each veterinarian that worked with him.
Niles Animal Hospital achieved accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in 1953 and has remained accredited since then. The accreditation holds us to higher standard of care.
Dr. Peter Sakas started at Niles Animal Hospital in 1983 and purchased the hospital from Dr. Lafeber in 1985 upon his retirement. Dr. Sakas continued to specialize and teach avian and wildlife medicine. He worked with and trained many of the avian veterinarians that are still here today in the Chic...agoland area. In March 2020, we sadly lost Dr. Sakas. Currently Dr. Abete and Dr. Staunton purchasing Niles Animal Hospital and want to continue the same level of care and specializing not only in dog/cat medicine but avian, exotic and wildlife medicine as we have for many years.
