Oakhurst Equine Veterinary Services has an immediate opening for a Lead Veterinary Technician. Oakhurst is an equine veterinary clinic located in Newberg, OR and founded in 1996 by Dr Jack and Cookie Root. Over the years, the farm, equine hospital, and ambulatory practice has grown to four full-time veterinarians with more joining our team in August of 2021! Oakhurst Equine veterinarians combine a full range of quality services including reproduction, lameness examinations, state of the art diagnostics, preventive care, equine medicine, surgery, and dentistry.
Job duties include but are not limited to:
Train, supervise and assist the assistants/technicians in a variety of technical and patient duties that facilitate the work of the Veterinarians and Practice Manager
Ensure that the hospital and employees are in compliance with federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA.
Oversee the completion of daily checklist and maintenance logs.
Create employee schedules that align with doctor, team, and clinic needs.
Make recommendations to the Practice Manager concerning personnel matters, and disciplinary actions.
Provide guidance and direction to the veterinary assistant team, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance. Conduct timely performance evaluations, mediate interpersonal problems and address concerns from assistants.
Maintain effective communication with the team and Practice Manager
Establish assistant training programs, assure team satisfaction, maintain good doctor communication with the team and efficient workflow throughout the day.
Perform Technician responsibilities which include but are not limited to:
Obtain and record patient histories.
Perform routine laboratory procedures and tests.
Dispense and administer medications, fluids and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
Provide specialized care for hospitalized horses
Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for procedures
Assist in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures using a range of high-tech diagnostic equipment including radiographic, ultrasonic and endoscopic equipment.
Oversee cleaning, maintaining and sterilizing instruments, equipment, spaces and materials.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Knowledge:
Equine experience to some extent REQUIRED
Certification is a bonus, but not required.
Recognize and assist in solving professional, administrative and supervisory problems. Knowledge of the use, care, sterilization and storage of veterinary instruments, materials and equipment.
Strong communication, leadership, problem solving and motivation skills. Has the ability to direct, guide and assist a group of individuals.
Critical thinking - understanding logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
Knowledge of EZYvet software program is a bonus!
Physical Effort
Frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, and lift and move up to 50 lbs
Use strength and agility in capturing and restraining large, strong, active animals.
Schedule
Work days will be Tuesday through Saturday, approximately 7:30am to 4:00 or later as necessary, 40+ hours per week. Trades and fill-in with other shifts as needed.
