The Veterinary Medical Center of Central New York (www.vmccny.com) is a VECCS Level 1 Certified 24 hour emergency and specialty veterinary hospital in Syracuse NY. Established in 2002, our 14,000 square foot facility was constructed in 2006 and is conveniently located off two major highways for ease of access. Our internship has graduated successful veterinarians who have gone on to own and lead general practices as well as complete residencies in multiple specialties (88% successful match rate via VIRMP for residencies).
Interns spend 50% of his/her time on emergency, with the remaining 50% spent rotating through specialties +/- local general practices based on an individual's interests. Specialty rotations include internal medicine, surgery, imaging, anesthesiology, cardiology and oncology. A board certified nutritionist provides consultations once weekly, which the interns can participate in. Interns will receive mentorship and case management opportunities working with board certified specialists in each service as well as full time emergency clinicians. Interns will have the option of spending two weeks in two different cooperating general practices (one week in each practice)and will interact with clinicians and providers of the pain management service which includes acupuncture, chiropractic manipulation, physical rehabilitation and massage.
In addition to strong clinical skills, the successful intern will possess excellent communication skills and demonstrate an ability to deal with a wide demographic of clients in a variety of situations with a positive, compassionate demeanor. A good bedside manner is a must! In addition, it is important that our interns understand and value the role of each individual within the hospital and treat each of them with respect, as we expect them to treat our interns in the same manner.
The VMC is dedicated to the well-being of our interns. A licensed social worker works with our staff for wellness assessments, resilience coaching, and positive framing/client communications. Our interns work a healthy number of hours each week - with 2 days off per week to recharge. We understand that rest is important to optimizing your clinical growth! We are also proud to offer an above average salary in addition to a robust benefits program - you deserve it!
We look forward continuing to grow the internship program at the VMC. We are dedicated to providing a strong program which will enable participants to gain the skills and experience to launch a successful veterinary career, whether this be pursuing a residency or entering private practice as an emergency clinician or general practitioner. We are dedicated to maximizing an intern's growth, with a fine balance in clinical oversight and independent clinical duties. When on ER alone, the intern will always have an assigned doctor to contact for guidance (if needed). We pride ourselves on our strong mentorship and intern CE opportunities. In addition to clinical guidance, regular CE is provided for interns and staff, with an emphasis on pathophysiology review and recent literature review. All interns are required to give a presentation at they end of his/her internship year discussing a case of interest in depth. Clinical guidance and coaching will be provided.
