San Luis Rey Equine Hospital (SLREH) is seeking a qualified equine surgeon to join our team of professionals in North San Diego County. SLREH is equipped with comprehensive diagnostics including in-house laboratory, endoscopy, ultrasonography, digital radiography, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, nuclear scintigraphy, and computed tomography.
The position will consist of scheduled daytime surgery consultations and procedures, as well as some emergency duty. There is flexibility to increase daytime surgery appointments/electives as individuals clinical caseload expands. Duties include receiving and triaging emergency cases, elective surgeries (soft tissue and orthopedic), teaching and training interns - all while working within the unique practice culture. Friendly and attentive communication is essential within our team-based culture and throughout our local equine community. Qualified individuals must have a DVM or equivalent, NAVLE, CA state license (or ability to obtain through examination and/or reciprocity) and surgery credentials.
Previous relevant equine referral emergency medicine and surgery experience is ideal but new surgeon candidates are encouraged to apply. In addition, experience managing cases on an elective and emergency basis, includingintraoperative, and postoperative care is required.
Assistance and surgical oversight is available for candidates. San Luis Rey Equine Hospital has a strong sport horse and thoroughbred racehorse caseload. The practice is a busy referral center and the caseload continues to climb considerably, hence the need to add more members to the team. The hospital is also venturing into a large scale expansion with new facilities in development.

San Luis Rey Equine Hospital is in the heart of Southern California and horse country, located 45 minutes north of San Diego. Its a 20 minute drive to the pacific ocean for surfing and sunbathing, 20 minutes to Temecula Wine Country for wine tours and spa days, 1.5 hour trip to Joshua Tree National Park and the desert for hiking, and 1.5 hours to Big Bear or Idylwild for skiing and snowy mountain adventures. The culinary culture is bountiful in the region and the weather averages 80 degrees during the day and 50 degrees at night. The hospital is completely surrounded by year round horse racing and sport horse shows (Santa Anita Race Track, Los Alamitos Race Track, Del Mar Race Track, Galway Downs Eventing, Temecula Valley Hunter/Jumper Series, Blenheim Horseshows, HITS Thermal Horsepark etc). The San Luis Rey Training Center and Trifecta Equine Athletic Center are 5 miles from the hospital.
