The Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation (PDI) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University is seeking a veterinarian with experience and interest in aquatic animal medicine and aquaculture to participate in a fully-funded multi-state and multi-institution 2-year research project. This tenure track or health professional (clinical track) position will be further supported beyond the 2-year project for this individual to develop and carry out an outreach aquaculture health mission for Michigan and the Great Lakes region. Michigan State University has a long history of aquatic animal health research and outreach, with collaborations throughout the Great Lakes region, the US, and the world. We are seeking an innovative, service-oriented, highly effective communicator with expertise to continue this strong tradition of outreach as well as teaching and research within the CVM, helping lead us into the future where global aquaculture will continue to grow.
Responsibilities
For the first 2 years, the successful candidate will report to the project director of the funded USDA-NIFA North Central Regional Aquaculture Center (NCRAC) project “Improving fish health in the NCR by integrating outreach with the development of alternative disease prevention methods,” and the PDI department chair. After 2 years, the candidate will report directly to the PDI chair as they develop their research and outreach activities and projects in collaboration with members of the aquatic animal health community.
For the first two years project, the successful candidate will:
Develop, conduct, and analyze a comprehensive fish health survey
Use that data to guide hatchery/farm visits, conduct workshops, and develop training materials (physical and virtual)
Collect samples to support the objectives of the funded NCRAC project
Provide guidance on fish management to stakeholders
Demonstrate fish health procedures including diagnostic evaluation
Participate in the development and evaluation of bacterins against bacterial coldwater disease
Work with the project team members to collect, analyze, and publish data in peer-reviewed literature
During the project and after completion, the successful candidate will:
Develop additional externally funded projects to support fish health in Michigan
Provide fish health expertise to stakeholders in the Great Lakes region
Train undergraduate, professional veterinary, and graduate students in principles of fish medicine through course work, field experience, and research opportunities
Essential Attributes
DVM or equivalent degree in veterinary medicine
Experience in aquatic animal health and the aquaculture industry
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills to diverse stakeholder groups
Understanding of the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and how they relate to the mission of a Land Grant University
Candidates must be either a fully licensed veterinarian or eligible for an academic-limited license
Desired Attributes
Several years experience in aquatic animal health
MS or Ph.D. in veterinary medicine, pathology, ecology, epidemiology, or other related field
Experience with field and/or experimental studies
Experience teaching students (undergraduate, veterinary, graduate)
Experience in grant-writing and grant management
