The Wild Animal Sanctuary is seeking an experienced Licensed Veterinarian to oversee and run our clinics.

Interested candidates should have a strong work ethic and work history in Vet medicine, while having a solid background in Critical Care and Shelter based veterinary medicine. Duties include but are not limited to: Record keeping, medication distribution, physical examinations, blood draw, sample sending/receiving, x-rays, interpreting laboratory results and surgical procedures.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary operates two facilities within Colorado, and one in Texas.  All three facilities have fully operational veterinary clinics on site, with both Colorado facilities being the primary responsibility of this position.  Remote (virtual) monitoring of the Texas operation is required, yet, doing so only requires 1 to 3 hours per month.

Travel to the Sanctuary’s second location in southeast Colorado, as well as on certain rescue missions, is required. However, travel time is limited to an average of 4 days a month.  This position does involve in-the-field physical work, so candidates need to be able to work in varying outdoor conditions and perform physical duties that require dexterity, agility and endurance.

Other Needs/Job Scope:

• Veterinarian work in all aspects of preparation and field work for the rescue, immobilization, anesthesia, handling and sample collection of captive exotics/wildlife.
• Procure, prescribe, track, inventory and dispense capture supplies including controlled substances, drugs, and veterinary supplies. Train and provide oversight with the Veterinarian Technician and Animal Care Medical Associates.
• Maintain medical records, databases, and reports pertaining to chemical capture such as controlled substances/drug dosages, administration, morbidity or mortality.
• Direct or assist projects requiring veterinary medical skills involving exotics/wildlife such as physical and visual exams, necropsy, surgery, surgical implants, and use of anesthetics, treatment, tranquilization, immobilization, physical capture, disease diagnosis, and tissue biopsy.
• Training and education of none medical animal care staff of related husbandry and veterinary care.

Minimum Job qualifications:

• Doctoral degree in veterinary medicine from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine & Licensed Affiliated with AAVSB (American Association of Veterinary State Boards)
• Medical and Surgical experience
• 3-7 years of work experience in related field
• Possess valid DEA license and federal accreditation.
• Possess/be able to obtain veterinary licensure for the state of Colorado.
• Valid Driver’s License
• Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
• Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
• Must be able to be on call/available for consultation on a permanent basis.
